Link: 8 things you can do to care for the planet

Mar 6, 2019

Caring for the planet is one of those things that can seem out of our reach.

The problems are too big and complex to wrap our heads around. There aren’t any practical steps we can take in our everyday lives. And there’s nothing we can really do to help anyway. Right?

Nope. […]

Below are eight things that you — yes, you, the person reading this — can do to care for the planet.

Inspiring list from the New York Times:

  1. Hang on to your smartphone: keep it longer, recycle it, buy used ones;
  2. Leave leaves: they act as shelter for insects and fertiliser for the soil;
  3. Use a dishwasher, not the sink: modern dishwashers use much less water than a standard dish handwashing in the sink, use them;
  4. Buy fewer clothes: no textile fiber can be produced without using natural resources, both synthetic and natural ones. So stick to your clothes as long as possible;
  5. Consider your online order, from click to carrier: every delivery has a carbon footprint, gather as many items as you can in one delivery instead of having purchases sent separately;
  6. Divest from fossil fuel: do not invest in them, they don't need nor deserve your money;
  7. Be mindful of your food waste: food statistics are mind-blowing, both in terms of waste and water needed to produce them. The least we can do is choose what to eat and make sure nothing gets wasted;
  8. Tune your heating system: maintenance is one key not to use more power than needed, not setting the thermostat to ridiculously high or low temperatures is one other.
