Biting apples

Dark theme support

Apr 3, 2019

Yesterday, in one of those days I felt like a master of coding even if I just did something rather ordinary, I implemented dark mode to Biting apples!
The latest Safari release checks if websites have a dark theme when the system theme is dark itself and shows colors accordingly; it was thus time to write some code so that this website appearance matched the UI of the visiting system. After a bit of searching, I found this short helpful guide and, voilĂ , here comes the darkness.
To check it out, turn your system appearance to dark under System Preferences > General or use this nice utility called NightOwl that can change the system theme according to schedule or sunsets and sunrises.

As for design choices, I decided to switch all text to pure white, while maintaining links and dates the same color they were. Background is dark grey instead of pure black.
This changes are kind of forward-looking too, since - as the rumor say - iOS 13 will gain dark mode support too, a move that makes total sense also from an energetic point of view once all the iPhones you sell have OLED displays.
