Bumpy Catalina rollout
Oct 22, 2019
In less than a week since its previous update, Apple is releasing a new Catalina supplemental update, one that should supposedly fix installation issues and iCloud login problems.
Fixing the installation process is more than welcome: out of the three Macs in my family that were updated to macOS Catalina in the past weeks, only mine went through installation with no problems. My dad's and my wife's Macs both got stuck during installation (moreover, in 2 different moments of installation) and had to be rebooted to get them completing the process - a move we all did with much hesitation and finger crossing, since force shutting down a computer during the installation of a major OS update is one of the worst and most risky things I can imagine to do.
All this said, it's hard to picture what's happening inside Apple's macOS software team these days: they clearly appear to have moved to a more frequent patch release schedule - something that's not bad per-se, but that conveys a sense of uncertainty and bother, especially since the OSes that have just been released are all but free of bugs.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I'd rather have less, more stable and significant updates than a hailstorm of non-patching patches.
